At Snapfōn Wireless, we understand the importance of ensuring your child’s safety in today’s digital world. The iPhone is a powerful tool for communication, learning, and entertainment, but it’s essential to set boundaries to protect your child.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to set up an iPhone with parental controls, ensuring a safe and controlled environment for your child.

Step 1: Set Up Family Sharing

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Select Family Sharing, then Set Up Your Family.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to add your child’s Apple ID. If your child doesn’t have an Apple ID, you can create one for them.

Family Sharing allows you to share apps, music, and other purchases without sharing accounts. It also lets you monitor and control your child’s device from your iPhone including requirements on purchase confirmation from your own phone and location sharing.

Step 2: Enable Screen Time

  • Open Settings on the child’s iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap Screen Time.
  • Select Lock Screen Time Settings to set a password for turning Screen Time settings on and off.

Screen Time gives you insights into how your child is using their iPhone and allows you to set limits on apps and features.

Step 3: Set Downtime and App Limits

  •    In Screen Time, tap Downtime.
  •    Set a schedule for when your child’s device will be off-limits (e.g., bedtime).
  •    Tap App Limits to set daily time limits for specific apps or categories of apps.
  •    Choose the apps and set the time limits according to what you feel is appropriate.

Step 4: Set Content & Privacy Restrictions

  1. In Screen Time, tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  2. Toggle the switch to turn it on.
  3. Go through each category (e.g., iTunes & App Store Purchases, Allowed Apps, Content Restrictions) and adjust the settings based on your child’s age and maturity.

You can restrict explicit content, prevent purchases without your approval, and decide which apps and features your child can access, including but not limited to the ability to access the app store or the internet.

Step 5: Enable Location Sharing

  1. In Family Sharing, select Location Sharing.
  2. Tap Share Your Location.
  3. Choose to share your location with family members.

This feature helps you keep track of your child’s whereabouts, providing peace of mind.

Step 6: Regularly Review and Adjust Settings

Children grow and their needs change. Regularly review and adjust the settings to ensure they remain appropriate to your standards for your child’s age and maturity level. You can access each family member that you have set as a child under your account over in your own iPhone’s Screen Time settings and adjust settings within there. Discuss digital safety and responsible usage with your child to help them understand the importance of these boundaries.

At Snapfōn Wireless, we’re committed to helping you create a safe digital environment for your entire family. Setting up parental controls on an iPhone is a proactive step in guiding your child’s digital journey while protecting them from potential online risks.
